In the two years since I last judged Alaskan Malamutes I have observed some disturbing shifts in the way some are interpreting the breed standard. We need to remember what the functions of a Malamute are and what the requisites are in order for the dogs to efficiently and effectively fulfil those functions. Thankfully, today I saw very little of this deviation from type and what my entry lacked in quantity, it certainly made up for in quality. Once again, it was delightful to re-visit some dogs I have previously judged as youngsters and to see them maturing well. Remember, this is generally a late maturing breed. Please be patient!

1st. Wolfe’s Ch Hawkeye Polarni Usvit. Handsome 9 year old dog with broad head with excellent small well set ears, oblique set to eye. Good length to neck and slope of shoulders, plenty of bone. 2nd. Dolan’s Siskara We Will Rock You. 8 months old. Lovely head and expression, correct set to eyes and small ears. Good shoulder placement, topline developing, bone OK and in good coat. Good movement coming and going when settled.

2nd Ellis’ Chayo Cause Celebre. Just 20 months. Excelent head with correct almond shaped eye. Strong neck, plenty of bone. Correct slope to topline, held well. Another good harsh coat. Sound mover.
