Judge's Critiques
I would firstly like to thank the committee for inviting me to judge my breed originally for 2026, but with the sad passing of our original judge, I was happy to assist in standing in a year earlier than expected. Condolences must go to the friends & family of Di Butler. Also, thank you to the exhibitors
for attending despite the change of judge.
I would like to draw attention prior to going any further to the first part of the Malamute breed standard, ‘heavily boned, powerfully built’ – this is my immediate first thought when I am looking for what I would consider a Malamute that is of breed type. Whilst other attributes are equally important, a Malamute needs to look like a Malamute & look like they would be able to do the job they were originally bred for. Primitive functionality is paramount to me as a breed specialist judge.
PD (2/1)
1. Mr M Colton’s Chayo Play With Fire. 11 month old well made male with a good overall profile on initial inspection. Head broad with well placed ears, dark pigmentation, eyes dark & obliquely set giving a typical expression. Well placed shoulders leading into a good topline that was held nicely on the move. Strong pasterns which is pleasing at this age & gave him clean movement in all directions, topped off with a lovely waving plume. Super character. BPIB
JD (3/2)
1. Mrs N Raby’s Kaskae La Voila At Icemoon. 16 month old well grown lad. Pleasing head & expression, helped with well set ears & dark eye. Good shoulders, slightly loose topline which is to be expected sometimes during the adolescence stages. Slightly less substance than some other exhibits. Tail well set with a typical waving plume. Really enjoyed himself today but settled well.
LD (4/3)
1. Miss F Morris’s Chayo Top Gun. 2 year old substantial male with a lot of appealing qualities throughout. Very attractive broad head with dark eye & small well furred ears. Moderately angled giving a pleasing profile. Very well off for bone & good pasterns. Excellent plume. Originally distracted when entering the ring but steadied as the class progressed.
2. Mrs M & Mr N Facer’s Chayo Unlock The Power. 2 years of age, slightly lighter throughout than 1 but still carrying a moderately angled frame with tight feet giving him an appealing side profile. Good head with nicely placed small ears & dark eye. Covered ground well but at times a little narrow behind.
OD (5/2)
1. Mrs S Ellis-Payne’s Chayo Here Comes Trouble. At 2 years old this boy has plenty to like & was just the kind of substance I was looking for. Although still very young he had a masculinity about him that immediately took the eye. Well developed throughout. Super head with kind expression, small, well set ears & dark eye. Body strong, ample rib & good depth of chest with firm topline, very well off for bone, strong pasterns & tight feet with short strong hocks, allowing him to move to the full extension freely. Presented in excellent coat , set off with a well furred plume. Covered ground very well in a large ring & was sound in all directions. BOB
2. Mr F Tozzi’s Multi Ch The Magician Uniroyal. A 7 year old male who is of a slightly more compact scale but all in proportion. Attractive head piece with a quizzical expression. Dark eye, well placed small ears. Makes a good outline with stood. Nice neck & firm in topline. Tail well set & furred. Shown in good condition. Moved well but preferred the extension of 1. RCC

1. Mrs G & Miss R Woodhead’s Noraisy Take My Breath Away JW. 8 year old male with good substance & holding a good shape in side profile & on the move with pasterns still strong. Well off for bone with good spring of rib. Good looking head with expression helped by his well placed ears & oblique eye. Well furred plume shown in full on the move.
SBD (1/0)
1. Miss J Croft’s Dreamwolves Oh My Oh My. Another quality exhibit of 8 years. Lovely head with kind expression made appear even softer by his small well placed ears & expressive dark eye. Substance good throughout. Short, well let down hocks giving him a steady gait when on the move. Chatty boy who loved his moment & made me smile! BSB
PB (2/0)
1. Mrs Sue Ellis Payne’s Chayo Feel The Heat. 11 month old girl who is well made throughout with good size & substance. Pretty head with a soft expression but enough stop without being over done. Dark eye, well set. Ears well furred of a good size but she wasn’t too keen on using them to her advantage today. Carries a good depth of rib & a strong loin which was apparent by how she held her topline on the move. Lovely plume despite her leaving most of her undercoat at home.
2. Mrs J E & Miss J Smith’s Snowshoes Sweet Symphony. Tidy, well put together 11 month old. Super attractive all though with an appealing head & expression. Good neck leading into good strong topline. Well groomed & presented, showed herself off well but she didn’t have the angles of my class winner to enable more extension on the move. For my preference, I would just prefer a little more of everything she has.

1. Mrs J E & Miss J Smith’s Snowshoes Sweet Symphony
LB (4/1)
1. Miss F Morris’ Chayo Love On The Rocks. Very attractive exhibit who took my eye immediately on entering the ring. At 2 years she is coming into her prime. Feminine but carrying super substance & bone with a very typical head. Small, well furred ears, beautifully dark oblique eye, giving her the best of expressions. Well sprung rib, with firm topline, short well let down hocks seeing her extend true & fully. Carrying a superb coat with a waving
plume to finish off the package. Just need to watch her weight carefully as with such a profuse coat this could give an impression of being too heavy. BCC
2. Miss RJ Brown’s Rumba Vasilyev Ostrov For Cupan (Imp Ukr) JW. 2 year old feminine female with an attractive outline in profile & an expressive pretty head piece. Good eye & ear placement, nice depth to muzzle with a firm neck & topline. Tail well set & carried. This girl was fit & toned but is just too slight in stature for me throughout & her movement wasn’t as definite or as energetic as my class winner.
OB (1/1)
1. Mr P & Mrs M Page’s Ch The Magician Bloody Mary Cedarcreek (Imp Ita) 5 year old fully mature female who makes an appealing picture on the stand. Her head is attractive with small well placed ears, oblique eye & a moderate muzzle giving a good expression. She was presented well in a good coat & well furred & set plume. She has a good depth to chest & moderately angled on the rear. I felt that her rear out moved her front not making for the balance of extension I was looking for on the day.
VB (4/1)
1. Mrs E & Mr S Edwards & Molloy’s Bel Ch Wintablizard’s Gin Lover. At just short of 10 years old, this girl gave it her all & you couldn’t help but take notice of her in some serious competition that she had especially in the bitch line up. Strong female in tip top body condition & muscle tone. A great head, strong but so attractive with the onset of small ears & a dark eye. Topline held well throughout, good front & her hocks were short & strong giving her a positive action in all directions. I could not deny this girl top honours. RCC
2. Mrs G & Miss R Woodhead’s Koromadel Rushin Around at Noraisy. Super example of our breed holding her own at 12.5 years. Shown in good condition throughout, pretty head with the correct placement of eras & eye. Good substance & excellent feet & pasterns for her age. Nice full well furred plume & good solid topline. Unlucky to meet my class winner today who tipped the balance for movemet.
