Judges Critiques
I would like to express my gratitude to the Alaskan Malamute BEC, Sue Ellis Payne, for arranging for me to be observed at this Club Show, enabling me to be elevated to Level 3 in Alaskan Malamutes. I must also thank my Observer, Kath Howarth, for all the help and advice she gave me on my judging. I would like, also, to thank all other committee members for agreeing to this arrangement. I must not forget our Stewards, who helped everything run smoothly on the day. Lastly, none of this would have been possible without the dedication of the Show Manager, Joan Sheehan, who had previously mentored me. A final thanks to the exhibitors for bringing their dogs along and allowing me to assess them.
MINOR PUPPY DOG (1,0)
1st Brouard’s ICYCOOL XAVIER TO ORSAMALS : This 7 month-old dog was quite affectionate and had a broad head, which was proportional to his body. His large, square muzzle was in balance with the rest of his skull. His dark eyes were set obliquely and were almond-shaped. His jaws were quite powerful and his teeth were large. His neck was short and strong. His chest was quite deep. His straight back sloped gently down to his croup. His thighs were strong and his stifle was well-bent. His feet were large and compact. His movement was rhythmic and easy for one so young. He was well deserving of his placement.
PUPPY DOG (1,0)
1st Sutton’s ICEWOLF MIDSOMMER DREAM : This 11 month-old dog was powerful for his age. He had a large muzzle and flat cheeks. His almond-shaped eyes were dark in colour. His small ears had rounded tips and faced forwards. His large teeth had a scissor bite. His forelegs were well boned. Obviously, the support and shock absorption offered by his pasterns will improve with age. His back was straight and his loins were quite strong. His hindquarters were quite muscular and his rear legs were straight when viewed from the rear. His tail was plume-like in shape. His movement was somewhat easy.
JUNIOR DOG (1,0)
1st Sutton’s ICEWOLF MIDSOMMER DREAM : This dog has already been critiqued.
POST GRADUATE DOG (4,0)
1st Jelf’s CHAYO FIRE IT UP FOR LAPEMA : This 18 month-old dog had a powerful, broad head and large muzzle. His dark eyes were obliquely set. His powerful jaws had large teeth that met in a scissor bite. His forelegs were heavily boned and well-muscled. His chest was wide and deep. His back was perfectly straight. His hindquarters were clearly powerful and his legs were straight when viewed from the rear. His feet were large and compact. His tail was well furred and was shaped like a well-supported plume. He had a powerful drive when gaited, with the distance between his feet being neither too close, nor too far apart. All in all, he was a lovely specimen of the breed.
2nd Partridge-Bebb’s KASKAE SHOW ME THE MONET AVEC KEIGHANYA : This 23 month old dog had a broad head that was proportional to his body. His muzzle scarcely diminished in either width or depth. His eyes were almond-shaped. His erect ears were small, with rounded tips. His jaws were powerful. His shoulders were moderately sloping. His neck was short and strong. His front legs were straight and he was well up on his pasterns. His topline sloped gently down to his croup. His loin was well-muscled. His hocks were strong. His hindquarters generated considerable propelling power. His tail was a well-furred plume. His movement was rhythmic and tireless. He competed well for the #1 slot.
3rd Raby’s KASKAE LA VOILA AT ICEMOON : This 23 month-old dog’s head was proportional to his body. His erect ears were rounded at the tips. His eyes were obliquely set. His muzzle was typically square in outline and his cheeks were flat. His strong teeth had a scissor bite. His neck was strong and his shoulders were moderately laid back. His body was reasonably strong and powerful. His back sloped gently towards the rear. His hindquarters were strong and muscular. His hindlegs were straight and vertical when viewed from the rear. He had quite an easy gait.
LIMIT DOG (5,1)
1st Facer’s CHAYO UNLOCK THE POWER : This 2 ½ year-old dog had good bone throughout and was mature for his age. His broad head was in proportion to the rest of his frame. His small ears were erect and his dark brown eyes were set obliquely. His powerful jaws had large teeth, with an incised bite. His short neck was moderately arched and was quite strong. His shoulders were broad and moderately laid back. His chest was broad and deep. His loins were very well muscled. His hindquarters were very strong, giving him impressive propulsion at the rear. His tail was plume-like and well supported. His gait was quite rhythmic and appeared to be tireless. RESERVE BEST DOG
2nd Druce’s KASKAE HELL OF A VIEW AT DRUXIE (AI) : This 5 ½ year-old dog had a broad head, with flat cheeks and a muzzle with a correct square cross-section. His dark eyes were set obliquely. His neck was short and moderately arched. His shoulders were moderately sloping and well-muscled. His forelegs were well-boned and his pasterns were upright, though still having an element of suspension in them. His chest was deep and wide. His topline was strong and straight. His loins were reasonably well-muscled. There was plenty of power in his hindquarters. His feet were large and compact. His tail was well-furred.
3rd Burgess, Burgess and Page’s CEDARCREEK THE ONLY WAY IS UP : This 2 year-old dog was quite lively in the ring. His broad head was rounded in shape. His ears were small and well-rounded at the tips. His eyes were large and almond-shaped. His teeth were large. His short neck led on to strong shoulders that were well laid back. His forelegs were vertical and sufficiently boned, with strong muscle. His chest was broad and deep. I preferred the straightness of the backs on #1 and #2. His hindquarters were well-muscled. His ‘snow feet’ were sufficiently large and compact. His movement was quite convincing, but the movement of #1 and #2 was a little more rhythmic.
OPEN DOG (4,1)
1st Ellis-Payne’s CHAYO ONE IN A BILLION : This 2 year-old dog impressed with his overall power. His broad, masculine head was in proportion to the rest of his body. His large muzzle was both wide and deep. His teeth were large and met in an incised bite. His cheeks were flat. His neck was slightly arched and strong, leading on to well-laid shoulders that were moderately sloping. His vertical forelegs were well-boned. His chest was broad and deep. His forechest was visibly strong. His loins were well-muscled and not too short. His hindquarters did not disappoint, being exceptionally strong. His powerful legs were vertical when viewed from the rear and propelled him well on the move. He was an excellent class-winner. BEST DOG & BEST OPPOSITE SEX
2nd Tozzi’s MULTI CH THE MAGICIAN UNIROYAL (ATC AZ489231TA) : This 7 year-old dog was another powerful specimen, who had a very pleasing outline. His broad head had a strong, square muzzle and flat cheeks. His dark eyes were almond-shaped and set obliquely. His small ears were erect and were rounded at the tips. His teeth had a scissor bite. His strong, well-arched neck supported his head well. His shoulders were moderately laid back. His forechest was well developed. His chest was strong and deep and his topline remained straight on the move. His rear legs were very powerful and propelled him well on the move. He had large, compact ‘snow feet’. Although 2nd on this occasion, I felt that this, too, was a dog that was full of class. He only narrowly missed the #1 slot on this occasion. BEST VETERAN DOG & BEST VETERAN IN SHOW.
3RD Innes’ ICYCOOL HUDSON BAY (AI) : This 5 year old dog also had much to like about him. He had a typically large, rounded head, with a muzzle that was square in outline. His eyes were almond in outline and were obliquely set. His strong jaws had large teeth. His short, slightly arched neck was well set on to his muscular shoulders. His strong forelegs were well-boned. His chest was comparably broad and deep. I preferred the shorter body length of #1 & #2. His hindquarters were muscular and allowed him to move freely. His tail was reasonably well furred. His feet were large and compact, with well-arched toes.
VETERAN (3,1)
1st Tozzi’s MULTI CH THE MAGICIAN UNIROYAL (ATC AZ489231TA) : This 7 year-old dog has already been critiqued.
2nd Woodhead’s NORAISY TAKE MY BREATH AWAY JW : This 9 year-old dog was still in good condition and performed well in the ring. His powerful, broad head was in proportion to his body. He had flat cheeks. His large, strong muzzle had a square outline and extended
forward from his globe-like head. His small ears stood erect above his head and had rounded tips. He had brown, almond-shaped eyes. His short neck was strong. His body was very robust, having a deep, wide chest. His forelegs were straight and well-boned. I would have liked to have seen more support in his pasterns. His back sloped gently towards his croup, but needed a little more strength at this stage of his life. His loins were well muscled and not too short. His powerful hindlegs drove him forward both tirelessly and rhythmically. His well-supported tail was plume-like in outline.
