Judge's Critiques

It was a great honour for me to be invited to judge your championship show. This was my first assignment in the UK and I was a bit stressed regarding your rules and procedures which are slightly different from the FCI ones and mostly regarding the number of classes. Fortunately, I had a very proficient ring steward who was a great help to me. I was very pleased with my entry and with the general quality of the dogs I had to judge. I had a lot of very nice malamutes and in some classes the placement was decided on details as it was very hard to settle between them. I just regret not to be allowed to explain my judgements like we are encouraged to do on the other side of the Channel.

SPECIAL RESCUE STAKES

It is always a great honour to officiate at any Club Show, but especially so for the Alaskan Malamute Club of the UK. Thank you for a lovely day and very enjoyable appointment. I have watched Malamutes from the early days when Sibes and Mals used to compete in the rare breed classes, so I have seen many Malamutes over the years and observed their development keenly. As with the Siberian, though certainly not as pronounced, there are obvious variances in type, but, at the end of the day, one is looking for a dog that could perform its function with all the characteristic features that set it apart from the other Sled dog breeds. It’s a truly beautiful breed and the entry here was no exception. Some immensely pleasing dogs of the highest order were presented in these classes, and I was spoilt for choice. Thank you for the opportunity to go over some great dogs.

Special Rescue Stakes Junior D/B (6)
A lovely class, where all were rightly immature.
1st Brouard’s Sutarka Coco Chanel at Orsamals. What a cracker. Took my eye immediately as she had style with correct breed type. Certainly has the right name! Feminine head that is developing well. It was broad enough for age with the correct balance of skull to muzzle. Muzzle was large in proportion to skull. Lovely expressive almond shaped eyes of dark colour and also set obliquely. Ears were of correct size and shape and well furred, set wide apart at the back of the skull as required by the standard. Slightly arched neck leading into good shoulders. Correct angle of upper arm. Pasterns perhaps just a little too sloping at present. Body and chest correct for age with good proportions. Moderate turn of stifle. Hocks low to ground. Large feet of correct shape. Tail set well and displayed a waving plume. Excellent mover in all directions when she concentrated. Out of coat, so hiding nothing, but presented in the highest order. A delightful prospect.
2nd Cameron’s Sutarka Fire Storm. Another nice dog who, like 1st had a nice shape. Just a bit longer cast at present through the body. Masculine head with good eyes for shape and set. Muzzle to develop on. Nice expression. Ears set wide enough apart and good for shape. Neck ok for length and musculature developing well. Very well balanced angles which he used well in profile movement. Chest and body correct for age though looking a little long in the loin. Ok for bone. Tail set ok and carried correctly when on the move. Again, out of coat so not hiding much. Like 1st, very well presented. Just couldn’t match 1st on the out and back on the day. Defeated 3rd who was very nice for type but decided to not really move to advantage.

Special Rescue Stakes Open Dog
If I had been awarding CC’s, I would have been very pleased with the quality of this class.
1st Wolfe’s Ch Hawkeye Polarni Usvit (Imp CZE). A very impressive upstanding male of the highest quality. Excellent head with good balance of skull to muzzle and muzzle looking large compared to skull. Skull broad and gradually tapers. Correct stop. Almond shaped eyes which were set well to give the true Malamute expression. Excellent ears for set, size and shape, also well -furred. Good strong neck of ideal length and good muscularity. Excellent shoulders and upper arm. Pasterns perhaps just a tad too sloping. Feet large and good for shape. Correct topline in that it did not slope too much. Good depth and width to chest for a mature male. Strong loins. Moderate turn of stifle and hocks set low to ground. Well muscled all through. Tail set good and displayed a waving plume. Excellent dog who powered round the ring with the typical rhythmic action. Very sound out and back. A first class dog who was shown to perfection. Best Overall Rescue
2nd: Loades’ Snowolf Black Ice Buddy. This boy impresses for overall balance all the way through. Good width to head. Eyes were of correct shape and set. Could maybe a shade darker, but a minor thing really, but did slightly prefer the expression of 1st. Good size to muzzle. Neck strong and of correct length. Good shoulder. Upper arm of correct length, not quite as good as 1st for angulation. Strong bone. Correct topline. Chest of good depth and breadth. Strong through the rear with excellent musculature. Strong hocks set low to ground. Tail set correct and displayed a waving plume. Had a really flowing gait round the ring, perhaps not quite as ‘rhythmic’ in nature to 1st, but he certainly covers the ground. Very sound gait out and back. Beat a very nice dog in 3rd place who displayed some excellent qualities, but didn’t quite have the topline of 1st and 2nd (was slightly dipping on the day), but he too had extremely good type, angulation and movement. A hard choice!

Special Rescue Stakes Open Bitch (15)
Another lovely class. Some nice bitches here went unplaced.
1st Wolfe’s Just Got to Love Me Polarni Usvit. A powerful looking bitch -yet- you can instantly tell she is a bitch! Very cheeky outlook. Lovely head with excellent eyes and small ears. Skull is moderately rounded between the ears and is broad enough. Good strong muzzle of good size in relation to skull without looking coarse. Neck correct for length and slightly arched. Great forehand with excellent shoulders and upper arm. Pasterns just off vertical. Good depth of chest and width is ok, but I wouldn’t want anymore. Topline maybe a touch flat- in my opinion, could just do with a tad more slope from shoulder to croup for perfection. Well muscled loins of correct length. Moderate turn of stifle. Correct tail set and carriage on the move, and displayed enough of a waving plume. Feet good for size and shape. First class mover from all angles. Would just like her in slightly harder condition through the body. Handled once again to perfection. I’m sure she will gain a Champion crown.
2nd: Loades’ Snowolf Blackpowder Chick. The outline of this bitch catches your eye. Head is good for size, bone and proportions. Eyes of correct shape, but a little light in colour for my preference which gave a slightly ‘wilder’ expression than 1st. Eyes set well. Ears good for size and shape and set well back on the skull. Neck ok for length. Excellent angulation fore and aft. Good bone. Excellent depth of chest which also had good width. Could maybe do with a little more substance. Loins strong. Tail set correct and carried well on the move. This was another bitch who could certainly move. Covered so much ground. Little shy on the day which gave ground to 1st also. Overall a very nice bitch all through. Beat 3rd on movement and although I loved the shape of 3rd and, indeed , preferred her topline to both 1st and 2nd, she could perhaps have been slightly more feminine. Three very good bitches here.
